The Challenge
Addressing the challenges of creating a sustainable and just food system requires ongoing support and collaboration among community-focused entities. These organisations are vital in fostering local food resilience, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and ensuring equitable access to healthy food. Projects aimed at enhancing their capacity to work with and support their communities are crucial. Such initiatives not only improve immediate food security but also build long-term resilience against environmental and economic disruptions. By strengthening the foundations of local food systems, these projects contribute significantly to a more sustainable and equitable food landscape, benefiting both present and future generations.
The Innovation
Yarra Valley ECOSS is a not-for-profit community organisation based on a 7.4 hectare permaculture designed farm at Wesburn. On this beautiful property, the organisation demonstrates sustainable living solutions for the community of the Yarra Valley and beyond. Their vision is to promote local food production, earth education, and multicultural living, while building work skills and developing a vibrant, resilient, inclusive and sustainable community.
Sustainable Table is partially funding the Crops for Community Program. This program is educating and empowering volunteers of all abilities to grow food crops for both distribution and sale.
This initiative marries the ECOSS Community Garden volunteers with the weekly produce market, local food relief organisations and ECOSS nursery, enabling opportunities for connection, skill building and greater food security in the Yarra Valley.
Why did Sustainable Table fund this project?
Yarra Valley ECOSS is a well-respected organisation that is engaging meaningfully with their community to grow and support local food. They are working towards a self-sustaining business model and need support in the meantime to run important programs that positively impact the Yarra Valley region.
